Birding and the Rio Grande

I know… Two posts in one day… It’s because I am so excited about spotting a Yellow-billed cuckoo bird on our guided 2-hour nature walk with fellow volunteers, Jackie and Kaz.

Our guide from the NWR was Raul, a very knowledgable birder and I’ll call him a naturalist. He knows plants, trees, birds, butterflies, insects, lizards, snakes, coyotes, etc. We were amazed and exhausted at the end of the tour, and very grateful for the experience.

During the walk we had an up close look at the Rio Grande. It was fascinating to see trails leading up from the water’s edge. And it was not hard to imagine people climbing right out of the water and hiding in the surrounding brush. A bit further along the trail and we also saw a few small articles of clothing that had been discarded… Back to the cuckoo… Here’s a photo I borrowed from Wikipedia, along with a couple we took of the Rio Grande. This is an amazing place!
