North to Alaska (changed plans)!

Scroll down to content

After careful consideration that included multiple discussions, an intense session of listing pros and cons, and cost calculations, we decided that the time commitment in a remote location and vehicle wear and tear are enough to warrant cancelling our Alaska volunteer plans. So, after a not-so-easy decision we are glad to have that behind us now.

What now, you ask? I’m glad you asked that question! We are very excited to announce that we have made the arrangements for an Alaskan Inside Passage Cruise and Land Tour. We will cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage (Whittier) for 7 days and then travel by Wilderness Train to Talkeetna and stay overnight in the Lodge. The next day we will travel by motor coach to Denali National Park and stay overnight at the Lodge there. On the third day we will travel by coach to Fairbanks where we will stay overnight and take a steamboat trip down the Chena River before flying back to Vancouver. And, we couldn’t be happier with this fantastic opportunity to relax and explore Alaska in a stress-free setting!

It is such a relief not to worry about border crossings in the motor home, or potential damage to vehicles, and I’m so happy to take a 2,000 mile drive into the unknown off of Ken’s to-do list!

I hope you stay tuned and cheer us on as we embark upon our first cruise this May. I promise that there will be plenty of pictures. Note to self… buy more SD cards for the camera!

Until then,

Dorothy & Ken

  1. Sounds like you guys are going to have a great trip! Did you plan it yourself? I’d like to do something like that. Hope you are both doing well.

    1. Thanks, Bonnie! We are ready to go 🙂
I researched it myself and knew it was THE ONE as soon as I saw the cruise/wilderness train combo. Look at Princess Cruises… they have loads of options and some packages are periodically on sale. The customer service agents (telephone) have been wonderful and patient. They’ve explained everything to the point that I finally feel like I understand and even helped with getting us the stateroom on the side of the ship where we will have the best glacier views. Of course, I can give a real review after the cruise, but so far I’m impressed. Oh, and if you have a Costco membership they also sell cruise deals, but it was only a slightly better deal and I don’t know anything about their customer service.

  2. Dorothy, that is so exciting!! Tom and I took this same trip (Princess land/cruise tour) with Caroline when she was in Kindergarten, and it was the best EVER!! It’s funny because when I suggested it to Tom, he really didn’t want to go. He didn’t understand why I would want to vacation somewhere COLD. I can’t tell you how many times he told me that he wanted to go back. He loved it!!

    1. Amy, I think it’s great that you convinced Tom to do that trip and that he loved it! I think we will love it, too but Ken isn’t quite as sure about it as I am!
