It’s great to be back volunteering at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
We arrived early on November 8th and started setting up when we were greeted by volunteers Lisa and Tony, and soon after, Katie came over for a heartwarming reunion! That afternoon the three of us and another volunteer named Barb drive over to the visitor center and then to the Boardwalk for a stroll.
The next day, Lisa, Katie and I took the golf cart and headed to the Boardwalk via the back way. Long story short, we accidentally strayed off of the Refuge and had to be rescued by Bruce and Kenny. This will go down in the history books as one of the best misadventures ever!
Yesterday I was scheduled to work in the visitor center and falling back into the routine was as easy as I hoped it would be. Only a couple of things have changed and I adapted well. Barb let me test my memory while providing good oversight.
It was great to see Susie when she stopped in briefly and I just love working with Gracie again! Katie and Lisa stopped in and brought grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch.
Ken spent his first workday on the fire boat with volunteers Jim and Tom. They cleared the water trail all the way to Floyd’s Island, deep in the Swamp. Unlike his last trip to Floyd’s Island, they got back without incident.
Today we cleaned the outside of the coach and then I took the golf cart out to the boardwalk for photos and a relaxing walk. I wrongly imagined that I wouldn’t take many photos this time since I took so many when we were here before, but it’s impossible not to because this place is so amazing, and I’m obsessed with water lilies!
We have a few days off and then we help prepare for and work during Pioneer Day and I’m so excited about that, since it will be our first time. Another photo opportunity!
Until then, best wishes from the Swamp,
Dorothy and Ken
