I’ve been waiting for two years (since we volunteered at Sacramento NWR in 2018) to see a Wood Duck and it has finally happened!
I first spotted a pair of Wood Ducks yesterday here at Loxahatchee NWR in the waterway alongside of Lee Road when I was on my way to work. I didn’t have my camera and the cell phone pictures just didn’t do them justice. So, this morning I dressed, armed myself with my camera and took an early morning walk.
To my surprise, I didn’t find a pair of ducks, I found four of them. Unfortunately, they are very skittish and an Egret flew low overhead, startled them and caused them to fly away after just one distant photo. On the bright side, I did manage to get an excellent photo of a beautiful a Black-crowned Night-Heron.
This evening, when we arrived home from shopping, Ken and I spotted another pair. As I had hoped for this, my camera was at the ready, so I took a few more photos!

Ken and I travel full-time in our motor coach throughout the United States. We have traveled along the Gulf of Mexico down to Key West and from Key West north along the East Coast all the way to Bar Harbor, Maine. We spent seven months in Southwest Texas right on the Rio Grande and from there we traveled to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon before heading back to our home state of Missouri. After a brief visit with family and friends we headed back to Florida and then we volunteered at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Southeast Georgia. The story didn’t end there because as of this writing we have visited all except three states. We went to Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and Death Valley National Park. We have continued our volunteer service by adding another winter at Okefenokee, a short stint at Bon Secour, and a winter at A.R.M. Loxahatchee NWR. Summer 2020 finds us in the Missouri Ozarks and we are still loving life. We have much more in store, so please stay tuned as we continue to travel across this beautiful country of ours!

Hello there and HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY !
I sure am glad you’re taking those nice hikes. Your determination has been very rewarding. Great photos! Sounds like you’ve really been enjoying your time there. Dorothy=Excel!! I even miss it myself.
I hope you’ve had good weather and nothing to scary. I really need to check out the map again of exactly where you are and keep an eye on the weather. Not much new here to talk about. It was 3 degrees when I woke up this morning with a wind chill of -5….burrrr. Good thing I was tucked under the nice warm blankets….and yes, Jerry brought me coffee. After all, it is Valentine’s Day. I know I haven’t written in awhile, no excuses..just lazy. I hope you and Ken are doing well, nice and healthy. We’re all good here.
Well, take care and hope to see you someday.
Love ya,
Robin
Weird thing, the above comment says I’m leaving this comment at 6:14 pm. It’s actually just 12:16 pm now.
I’d better get out that map soon! You’re a lot further away than I realized. LOL
Ha! Time travel?! We are well and enjoying the weather here… mid-80s… shorts and flip flops. Sorry that y’all have had such a cold, icy winter. I miss you and think about texting or calling and then I get busy and don’t follow through. Glad you have such a great Valentine who always brings your coffee. Can’t wait to see you in September, if not before.
BTW, summer plans have changed… Look up Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ohio along Lake Erie and plan to visit us there in July and August!
