5 Years, 10 Months and 24 Days Ago

We began our full time RV journey as we departed from Chesterfield, Missouri in our brand new RV on February 14, 2015. And what a ride we had!

During our travels we visited 46 states (visited Hawaii prior to RV travel for a total of 47 states) and volunteered 6,000 hours each at some amazing National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges and one Florida state park.

When Covid-19 had spread throughout the US in the Spring of 2020, we were recently settled into our fourth new RV and ready to strike off the last three states on our bucket list by Fall. We had so many awesome volunteer assignments lined up that we couldn’t decide which ones we were going to do.

And then Covid changed our plans. Not just once, but several times. We left Florida and headed back to Missouri where we were fortunate enough to spend the summer volunteering at Ozark National Scenic Riverways and by November we were on our way to Arizona for the winter before we were to report for volunteer duty at Death Valley National Park this month.

But, once again Covid interrupted our schedule. California issued a stay at home order and Death Valley closed their campgrounds indefinitely.

At that time we were faced with a tough decision, which we were hoping not to make until this time next year at the earliest.

It has always been our intention to choose between Florida and Arizona for our winter home, but faced with so much uncertainty and interruptions with volunteer programs across the country, we felt that the time to exit our RV lifestyle is now.

Fortunately, in December we sold the motor coach back to the dealership that we purchased it from (Phoenix location) and we began the process of buying a small winter home here in Mesa.

We are excited to make this announcement as we had our home closing this afternoon. It has been very hard for me to keep the secret, but I didn’t want to jinx anything until it was a done deal.

For the last three weeks we have been in a dollhouse of a (park model) rental in the same resort that we were staying at in the RV. It’s about the cutest place that could be featured in an IKEA catalog.

But, tomorrow we begin anew. We’ve had a ball buying furniture and accessories and I hope everything we bought fits in our little 2 BR/2BA manufactured home in a 55+ adult retirement community with lots of great amenities that I’ll feel better about using once Covid is at bay.

Meanwhile, Mesa is where we will stay hunkered down to try and stay safe from the pandemic and the stress of scheduling and rescheduling assignments and locations is behind us.

We feel optimistic that once we can safely travel again that we will eventually get to Wisconsin, Michigan and Vermont. Until then, we have plenty to do to get settled in here.

It’s been a great start to the New Year for us and we wish good health and happiness for each of you in 2021 and beyond.
